How to Be An Energy Conductor.

Jul 24, 2026

We all sense it—the energy of a room. Whether it's buzzing with excitement or heavy with exhaustion, the collective energy in our workplaces, communities, and even on our streets impacts us every day.

Remember your science class when you learned to turn a light on by connecting a battery? Or create a spark from two charged wires? In electrical terms,  An energy conductor is a material that allows the flow of electricity, heat, or light. In leadership terms, the energy conductor is the material that enables the collective energy in teams and organizations to flow consistently and clearly.

I often remind leaders that they have the power to be energetic healers. Go with me on this! Within their teams and organizations, they can shift the atmosphere, influencing the "energy soup" we all swim in. Think about how it feels when someone grounded, compassionate, and powerful enters your space. They move with intention, listen deeply, speak with clarity, and understand their role in the situation. Leaders who cultivate this presence can uplift and inspire those around them.

So, what IS energy? Let's get WOO.

We are more than just our physical bodies. Beyond the tangible, there's a subtle energy field, often called an aura. This energetic dimension interacts with both our physical and emotional selves, influenced by our thoughts, feelings, and even the world around us. It plays a hidden role in how we connect with others, shaping our interactions in ways we may not consciously realize.

Energy is such a fascinating concept! It makes sense that our thoughts and emotions would impact our energy fields and the fields around us. After all, we often talk about being "excited" or "drained" based on how our bodies feel. If this energy field extends beyond our physical bodies, it could explain why we sometimes feel an instant connection or disconnection with someone we've just met.

It reminds me of the saying, "You can't pour from an empty cup." If our energy field is depleted or unbalanced, it will likely affect our interactions and how we present ourselves in the world.

I want to go on the record that I, too, am learning to do this! Understanding how to manage my energy AND the energy in the room. How to set the tone. To move from reactive to responsive. I am guilty of doing all the ‘wrong’ things in my 20+ years in corporate leadership. Believing that moving with an overwhelming sense of urgency meant that I would be more productive and successful. I would love to go back in time and apply a greater awareness of how I would actively choose to set an energetic tone for my teams. And the beautiful part of being always unfinished? Leaders like me, we can always start to do better today. You just need the practice.

Here is 1 easy win to practice:

The 1 rule.

  • First, pause, do not rush in.
  • Take 1 deep breath and 1 purposeful exhale.
  • Pick 1 word that describes your intention and say it out loud before you enter the room.
  • If you own the meeting, set 1 outcome out loud for the collective time together.
  • If you sense that an energetic redirection is needed, mid-meeting, take 1 purposeful pause and set a new course.

Most people are not aware of their energy. They rush from moment to moment, meeting to meeting. They present with their needs and issues, rarely stopping to flush through what energy they are carrying into collective spaces. It is not anyone’s fault, it just isn’t something we are generally taught, especially in relationship to leading and developing others.

When the world feels complex and leaders notice that people and their energies need a shift, they recall that they can help cultivate a healthy, balanced, and productive energy field for their teams.

Remember, YOU are the conductor.
